Oromia (Ethopia)
Oromia is quite simply a special coffee. For one, its a Yirgacheffe, one of the great coffee varietals on the planet. For another, it is grown by a woman-run collective (Oromia) and certified fair trade. The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union is the largest Fair Trade coffee producer in Ethiopia. The Yirgacheffe varietal is grown by indigenous farmers of the Southwestern rainforests of the country. On a personal level, we've always loved Ethiopian Yirgacheffes but struggled to find a coffee that met our standards of both quality and ethics, particularly farms that were run by women and fair trade. Thanks to the Cafe Femenino program, we have found our coffee! We named our first blend Superior after the town of Superior, Arizona. Superior holds a special place in our hearts as it was our first road trip after moving to the Phoenix area. We remember exploring the small town, enjoying their annual Prickly Pear festival and feeling grateful to be in this amazing state. This coffee blend was created special for our customers who love a dark-roasted bean, but we think the flavor is nicely balanced for any palette. The beans were sourced from woman-owned farms in Sumatra (Indonesia) and Mexico, as well as from a farm in Ethiopia that funds university scholarships for women in the community. Hinga Kawa
Say hello to Hinga Kawa, our second Rwandan coffee grown by a co-op of women farmers. Since joining the Café Femenino program, the women farmers of Hinga Kawa have increased their income, their ability to organize, and their leadership opportunities The co-op was formed in the wake of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. Survivors and leaders to their core, nearly half of these women became the sole providers for their families after their husbands were killed or jailed during the 1994 genocide. The coffee is grown in high altitudes and the washing station is fairtrade certified. Hinga Kawa is a single-origin bean which features aromas of jasmine, berry, lemongrass, and citrus with a light, crisp flavor of earl grey, jasmine, and lemon.
