Located about 20 miles northeast of the town of Sancerre in the village of Alligny-Cosne, Maison Foucher makes their ‘Petit Le Mont’ Sancerre with grapes from the villages of Sancerre, Chavignol (near Monts Damnés) and d’Amignyt just like the big brother bottling. The only difference is those are always blended with some Sauvignon Blanc from outside Sancerre’s town lines in Touraine, so Sancerre isn’t on the label, which cuts the price and automatically turns this into one of the most killer values anywhere. With wonderfully chalky limestone soil, the wines have a solid core, with a wonderful roundness as well as that irresistible mineral streak. I get bright, steely notes of green apple, some stone fruit, jasmine blossom and green melon with soaring aromatics. This is one of those wines that grows on you with each sip and is hard to put down. This would go well with just about any food you want to pair it with, but it does scream for fresh seafood in particular.

This Sauvignon Blanc wine hails from the Anjou and Touraine regions of the Val de Loire. The grapes are grown in clay, schist, and flint soils, with the vines averaging 15 years of age under sustainable farming practices. The grapes undergo direct pressing, and the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 4 months on fine lees in steel tanks before being lightly filtered and bottled. The wine displays a pale yellow color with green reflections. On the nose, it offers enticing aromas of grapefruit, orange blossom, and bitter almond. The palate is driven by floral and citrus notes, delivering a refreshing and vibrant mouthfeel.

La Mancha, ES 50% Verdejo, 50% Sauvignon Blanc A blend of equal parts Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc, a common combination for the white wines of the region, and here made into an orange wine via a week of maceration on the skins. Aromatics of orange blossom and tropical jackfruit with moderately tannic dried citrus peels, tea and preserved apricots on the yeasty and textured plate. Certified biodynamically farmed grapes, therefore no pesticides or insecticides used in the farming. Native yeast fermentation, aged in steel tanks, bottled slightly hazy without any fining or filtering and only a tiny degree of sulfites. All at a breezy 11% ABV, an orange for afternoon chilling. The wine is part of the importer’s Gulp/Halbo line of Spanish wines made of organic and biodynamic grapes from Spain’s central La Mancha region.

Sonoma, CA The wine is mega delicious. It has a nose full of raspberry, marionberry, red plum and cocoa. There are gobs of raspberry, chocolate covered cherry, and boysenberry on the juicy palate. The acidity is balanced and zippy and in the finish there is cocoa powder-like tannin that keeps the wine fresh on the palate.

California Mild tannins structure a medium-bodied red with notes of red currants

Ruby red with bright purple hues. Generous aroma of red fruit and delicate spicy notes. Soft, with good structure, balanced and with good length.

Though you might associate gamay most closely with Beaujolais, the growing conditions and soils of the eastern Loire region also suit that light, relatively acidic grape. “Terres Blondes” is a release from Jean-Sébastien Marionnet (son of famed Touraine winemaker Henri Marionnet): the estate contracts with growers from the region to assemble a reasonably-priced blend. After being harvested by hand, the grapes are carbonically macerated and aged without oak. The profile is a touch earthier than the fruitiest Beaujolais, with minerality and tang to back up a floral nose. Sustainably grown.

100% Gamay. The Terres Dorées L'Ancien vines are Jean Paul's oldest vines at 40-60 years old. They grow on the sandy clay-limestone hills in his home village of Charnay in the southern Beaujolais and yield small, thick-skinned berries. The farming is organic and harvest manual. The earliest harvest of these vines goes into his Nouveau. Unlike any other Nouveau out there, there is no carbonic maceration

If you love wines of tension that exhibit purity and finesse, you will find Zestos old Vine Garnacha to be your new love. Zestos shows the complexity of a wine three times its price. In the words of Robert M. Parker Jr., Zestos is “a staggering value” and “an unbelievable wine for the price”. Zestos old vine is produced from Garnacha vines that were planted as far back as 1950 in the high elevation vineyards of San Martin Valdeiglesias, which is northwest of Madrid. Today San Martin produces some of the most floral and mineral-driven Garnachas in all of Spain. The older the vines, the better the wine. Old vines do not over produce. As a result, the vines yield fully ripened grapes.

The principal ingredient is assenzio, a variety of wormwood. Best enjoyed with citrus and tonic or soda.

Patrick Mata’s ancestors have been producing this artisanal Spanish vermouth for well over a century, and developed the perfect recipe over time. Having sold the original winery in the 1970s in Malaga, Mata Vermouth is now made in the northern Spanish province of Bierzo. This vermouth falls under the category of what people now call "sipping vermouths". It is sweet, yet bitter, and perfect served over ice on its own with a wedge of orange.

The aging in whiskey barrels lends not only nuanced flavors but subtle tannins to augment bright acidity—a new framework of expression. Notes and flavors of sorghum, French-burnt peanut, dry vanillin, roasted orange, and rancio-tinged baking spices are set against a backdrop of smoky/sweet, slightly funky bourbon barrel.
