  • Cantina Della Volta - Lambrusco Brutrosso 2017

Christian Bellei is, as Vinous said recently, "one of the true Lambrusco di Sorbara masters." A 4th generation Lambrusco maker, Bellei continues his father's innovation of making Lambrusco in the Champagne method - with the secondary fermentation in bottle and sediment disgorged after the secondary fermentation. He works exclusively with the lightest, most feminine, grape of the region - Lambrusco di Sorbara - to create wines that have plenty of deep, rich, red wine character to go along with enlivening, elegant, fizz. This 2017 vintage wine shows why Bellei's wines are on the list a Michelin starred restaurants around the world. Fresh strawberry and red cherry fruit showing a touch of late-season sweetness gets lifted by fine bubbles and notes of sweet spice, blood orange and tangerine pith. Plenty of depth and flavors intense enough to last all the way through the lip-smacking finish. Great on it's own and better still with salami, pizza and spicy foods of all kinds.

Very old vines which yield little.

  • Le Puy 'Emilion' Bordeaux 2022

Château Le Puy is an estate located atop a rare high hill on Bordeaux’ right bank; it is exceptionally rare in that that it's in its 14th generation of consecutive ownership by the Amoreau family. That's not the only thing that makes this estate rare: these are classically-styled wines made with fully natural methods; certified biodynamic in their vineyards, all fermentations are native; no fining and filtering, and never SO2 before fermentation is complete. This wine is around 85% Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon completing the blend: fermented in concrete and is aged for two years in neutral wood. Le Puy is glorious proof that famous châteaus aren't necessarily where the real wines are in this famous region!

  • Casa Piena Napa Valley 2014

"The 2014 vintage served this vineyard extremely well. Yountville is known for very open, giving wines that exude both power and grace in a balanced manner. Walking the Casa Piena estate rows, your boots sinkin to the cushioned soil and become rough-worn from all the ancient gravel that is found throughout the vineyard. Looking into the glass, the color of this wine is a nearly opaque, royal purple hue. Dynamic aromas of star anise, cassis, cedar bark, and pipe tobacco emerge from the glass. On the palate, notes of cranberry compote, cardamom, sage oil, blackberry reduction, and worn leather swell together, creating a lush, complex mouth feel. Framing the whole affair is a bracing acid backbone and complementary fine tannin structure. While showing very well now, with some cellar time this wine will evolve into an even more gracious example of what the Casa Piena estate property has to offer." — Thomas Brown, Wine Maker
